Can I become a social worker if I have a criminal record?

Social Worker Criminal Record?

To become a social worker you must first obtain a degree in social work. On application you will be asked about and have to declare any criminal record. At this stage it will be up to the university to decide whether or not to admit you onto the course. Some universities will ask you to attend a panel interview to discuss your suitability for the course and a career in social work.

You will be asked to disclose any criminal record regardless of whether the offence is a minor one and even where the conviction would be considered spent. Obviously minor offences from some time ago will be less of a barrier to entry.

You should be honest at this stage as lack of disclosure can lead to problems later in your course or career.

If you are accepted on the course and pass then you will have to apply to register with one of the regulatory bodies. Be aware that despite full disclosure to a university, acceptance on the course and successful completion of the course the regulator can still refuse to grant you registration. Once registered you can apply for social work posts. At this stage it will be up to the employer whether to employ someone with a criminal record.

If you need help or advice at any stage in the process then contact us. We understand how to best present your application and help you to best explain your circumstances.
